Dialogue is a way of being in conversation with others that nurtures new understandings, new perceptions and pathways to action. Dialogue offers the possibility of deep and enduring insights, both for individuals and for organizations. Dialogue is an inquiry, a reflection, a shared desire to create meaning. |

Organize seating in a circular fashion, whether people are seated in chairs or at a table. |
Introduce the concept of dialogue, then ask everyone to think about an experience in their past of "good communication" in a group. |

Ask people to share with a partner what the past experience was and to think about the characteristics of that experience. |

Ask group members to share what contributed to past experiences of good communication and write these characteristics on a flip chart. What behaviors create good communication? |

Ask the group to reflect on these characteristics by having each person in turn talk about his/her insights.. |

Close the conversation by asking everyone to comment in whatever way they choose. |

Come with a spirit of inquiry. What are the opportunities for learning in the conversation? Look at the assumptions behind your questions and the speaking of the participants. Seek clarification by asking follow-up questions. |

Be a good listener. Reflect on what is being said. What does it mean to you? How does it relate to your experiences? Value moments of silence, and let the conversation unfold naturally. |
Practice the art of "weaving" themes. As you listen to what is being said, think about ways to enrich and extend the collective themes of the dialogue. Learn to play off what is being said, adding new levels of interpretation and meaning. |

Bring an openness to new ideas and understandings. Challenge your own values and assumptions. What can be learned from other perspectives? Assume that the ideas and observations of others come from a desire to contribute. Be "present," you never know when the light of wisdom will shine. |
